AI Follow-Up Questions
AI Follow-Up turns key questions into mini-interviews. When a respondent answers a question you’ve flagged, AI reads their answer and asks one contextual follow-up — the “why” behind the rating or the detail behind the comment — without you writing a single branch.
Example
Your question: “How would you rate our onboarding?” → Respondent answers 2 stars
AI follow-up: “What was the most frustrating part of getting started?”
The follow-up is generated live from the respondent’s actual answer, so every respondent gets a relevant probe instead of a generic “please explain”.
Enabling AI Follow-Up
- Open your survey in the Builder (Build tab)
- Select the question you want to probe
- In the settings rail on the right, turn on AI follow-up
The question’s card shows an AI follow-up chip so you can see which questions have it enabled.
Which Questions Are Eligible
AI follow-ups work on question types whose answers are worth probing:
- Short text and Long text
- Star rating and Numeric scale
- Yes/No
Choice, date, and matrix questions are not eligible.
Limits
- Up to 2 questions per survey can have AI follow-up enabled
- Each flagged question generates at most one follow-up per respondent
What Respondents Experience
After answering a flagged question, the respondent sees the AI’s follow-up question as a brief interstitial step:
- They can answer it or skip it — it’s never required
- If the follow-up can’t be generated (for example, a slow connection), the survey simply continues — follow-ups never block a submission
Where the Answers Appear
Follow-up questions and answers are stored with each response:
- Results — open any response’s detail view to read its AI follow-up Q&A alongside the regular answers
- Analytics — follow-up answers are included with each response in the analytics view
Tips
- Flag your most decision-critical questions — an NPS-style rating or a key open-text field — rather than easy ones
- Pair a rating question with AI follow-up instead of adding a separate “please explain” text question; you’ll get sharper answers with fewer questions
- Follow-ups are only generated on the live, published survey — the builder preview won’t show them, so publish and test with a real submission to see one in action
