Adding and Managing Questions
This guide covers everything you need to know about managing questions on the builder’s Build tab.
Adding Questions
- Open your survey in the Builder (the Build tab is selected by default)
- Click “Add question” at the bottom of the content list on the left
- Select a question type from the picker
Question Type Picker
The picker organizes question types by category:
- Choice - Multiple choice, Yes/No, Dropdown
- Text - Short text, Long text
- Rating - Stars, Numeric scale
- Date & Time - Date, Time, DateTime pickers
- Contact - Email, Phone, Number, URL
- Matrix - Single and multiple select grids
- Display - Section headers, Plain text
Editing Questions
Everything is edited directly on the survey canvas — what you see is what respondents get.
Question Text
- Click the question text on its card
- Type your question
- Drafts save automatically a couple of seconds after you stop typing
Tips for good questions:
- Be clear and specific
- Avoid leading questions
- Use simple language
- Keep questions focused on one topic
Answer Options
For choice questions (Multiple Choice, Dropdown):
- Add an option — click the add-option row on the card and type
- Edit an option — click its text and type
- Remove an option — click the X next to it
Matrix Questions
Matrix questions are edited right on the grid:
- Add or remove rows and columns directly on the card
- Choose the scale style — Numbers, Stars, Emoji, or Labels — in the settings rail on the right
- Optionally add an N/A column from the same rail
New matrix questions start with 3 rows and a numeric 1–5 scale.
The Settings Rail
Select any question and its settings appear in the rail on the right:
- Question type — change the type without re-creating the question
- Required — respondents must answer before continuing (marked with an asterisk)
- Type-specific options — rating scale range, text validation (length, format), placeholder text, and more
- AI follow-up — let AI ask one automatic follow-up about the answer (learn more)
Reordering Questions
Drag questions in the content list on the left:
- Click and hold a question in the list
- Drag it to the new position
- Release to drop
Question numbering updates automatically.
Duplicating and Deleting
Hover over a question card on the canvas:
- Duplicate — creates a copy below the original, useful for similar questions
- Delete — removes the question (any logic rules pointing to it are cleaned up automatically)
Warning: Deleting a question removes it permanently. If you’ve already collected responses, those answers will also be deleted.
Card Chips
Question cards show small chips so you can scan your survey’s behavior at a glance:
| Chip | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Required | The question must be answered |
| Branching | Answers here decide where respondents go next (see the Logic tab) |
| Show/hide | The question is shown or hidden based on earlier answers |
| AI follow-up | AI asks one follow-up about the answer |
| Locked | The question is live on a published survey — wording can be edited, structure cannot |
Best Practices
Question Order
Organize questions logically:
- Start with easy, engaging questions
- Group related questions together
- Use section headers for organization
- Put sensitive questions later
- End with open-ended feedback
Question Length
Keep surveys concise:
- Aim for 5-10 questions when possible
- Longer surveys have lower completion rates
- Remove questions that aren’t essential
Clear Language
Write effective questions:
- Use simple, direct language
- Avoid jargon and acronyms
- Be specific about what you’re asking
- Don’t ask two things in one question
